All
the miles Katherine Wingert put in under the hot Florida sun this summer
while serving as a medical intern at the university of Miami served
her well as she won the seniors race at the Wolf Pack Cross Country
Invitational last Friday. Wingert and West Hills’ Elaine Gillespie
shared the lead for most of the hilly 1.5-mile circuit under hot, muggy
conditions. Over the final 300 yards Wingert’s 800-meter track
speed allowed her to power away to win by 8 seconds with a time of 9:21.
Most of the team members are still undergoing base training and didn’t
attend this early competition. Caitlin Bigham followed in the senior
race clocking 11:25. Alton Smith got his first taste of high school
cross country in the frosh boys event with a time of 10:51. Marissa
Nagler, also running in her first cross country race, placed 22nd in
the girls sophomore event with a time of 11:15 despite being hampered
by a cast on her arm courtesy of a recent soccer mishap. Karolin Ivarsson
and Katie Gomrick followed with times of 11:29 and 12:26. Jack Harms
clocked 14:35 over 2.2 miles in the boy’s sophomore race.
