The Mt. Carmel Cross Country Invitational has been around for over two decades and has grown into one of the top high school cross country races in the state. This year, in its 24th running, over 2500 runners from nearly 100 schools assembled at Morley Field to compete in 16 races over the Footlocker National Cross Country championship course. The small schools ran in the morning with grade-level races for boy and girls; the large school races followed in the afternoon. By the half-mile point of the boy’s small school freshmen race Islander Ben Enowitz found himself locked in a dual for the lead with Charter Oak’s Zack Wall who was down from Covina Valley. In the end Orange Glen’s Oscar Andrade passed them both in a tight finish. Andrade’s time was 17:03.4, Enowitz clocked 17:10.2, and Wall ran 17:13.5 over the hilly 5k course. Fourth place was 25 seconds back. Later in the day the large school race winners clocked 17:06, 17:07 and 17:32 so Ben had the 4th best time for the day in a closely packed group. All 5 of the top runners made the top-40 all-time best frosh list for this race. Jake Ruzevick PR’d in the senior boys race with a time 16:17.9. Jake came from off the pace and finished strong to finish 8th overall.
