Reid McLean on the awards stand after winning the section 300 meter hurdles championship in 2004 at Poway High School.

Junior Reid McLean seemed to come out of nowhere the last few weeks of the 2004 track season to first win the Harbor League 300 meter Hurdles championship then two weeks later the Masters meet at the CIF finals with the year's top time 38.94, the only San Diego section runner under 39 seconds. During the season he also ran the 400 in 50.15, high jumped 6' 3" and long jumped 21' 10". He also qualified for the AAU Junior Olympic nationals in the decathlon by winning the event by over 1000 more points than the runner up. He also placed 7th in the JO AAU nationals in the decathlon.

McLean and Jamie Klages at the 2004
state track meet. Klages broke the girls
high jump record
by 3 inches with a 5 ' 7" jump and placed 5th at the state meet.

Brett Simmons set a new standard for the 300 hurdles in 1999 by running 39.91 at the Harbor League Finals. Not only did this break the 36" hurdle mark but also the 30" mark of 40.7 for the 330 yard hurdles set by Frank Sanchez in 1975.

Previous Record Holder: John Bakker 40.8
(Balboa Stadium 1994)

John Bakker was a pole vaulter who hurdled well enough to establish school records in both the pole vault and the 300 meter hurdles. Like many pole vaulters he was an all-around athlete who could do several events. In the photo to the left he's shown taking the baton from Don Brown to anchor the 4x400 meter relay team.

The old record set at 330 yards of 41.4 converts to 41.16 for 300 meters so Bakkers time of 40.8 was significantly under.

Previous record holders:
Rob Ketts: 330 Intermediates (36") 41.4, 1990 at Poway

Dennis Walker: 330 Intermediates (36") 41.4, 1986 at Sweetwater
In 1986 the height was raised to 36 inches so the records for this event were reset.
In 1990 Reb Ketts matched that time
.

Previous record holder:
Frank Sanchez:
330 yard lows (30") 40.7, 1975 at Montgomery HS.

The first year the 300 hurdles were run was 1975.
Then they were set at 30" as opposed to today's 36" height.

Sanchez also had a 21-1.5 long jump mark and one of the highest point totals for CHS with 126.
