Rather than give a day-by-day description of workouts I have found it is more practical to give weekly guidelines. This allows each runner to get the work in according to their own life schedule. Since most of the summer training involves aerobic runs, and not specific workouts, it makes little difference what the order of runs are.
JUNE 5-11: Do steady runs of 30-35 minutes every other day.
JUNE 12-18: Run 2 days on and one day off for 30-35 minutes.
JUNE 19-25: Continue steady state runs for between 30-40 minutes for at least 4 days of the week. Also do 4-6 strides on at least 2 of the days.
JUNE 26-JULY 3rd:
Ideally you should be doing steady state runs 5 days this week, including a run 10 minutes longer than your average daily run. Include 6 strides every other day.
Voluntary practices will also begin this week. Details will be made available later.
JULY 3-9: Continue running 5-6 days per week. We will be doing more quality runs such as tempo and fartlek when we meet for voluntary practices. If you are unable to attend these you may want to check with a teammate to see what was done or contact me. Long runs should be at least every 7-10 days and be about 20 percent of your weekly mileage.
JULY 10-16: The same general idea as last week. The pace of runs should be coming down as fitness improves.
JULY 17-23: Continue the progression. Avoid jumping to this level if you have not built steadily into it. If is better if you go to the level, you are ready for than trying to catch up by jumping ahead. Gradual progression to allow for adaptation is key to avoiding injury.
JULY 24-30: More of the same. Official practice begins next week. By now you will ideally be running more than 250 minutes totaling at least 25 miles per week (some a lot more) and should be ready to begin the daily higher quality training the regular season will bring. Keep in mind that even if you are unable to meet these goals, some running is better than no running. Once the season starts, we will adjust your training to match the fitness level you demonstrate in an early time trial.
